More than 1,800 hotel workers are on strike at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort. Now in its third week, picket includes housekeepers, maintenance workers, front desk agents and food and beverage workers.
"After months of contract negotiations with our employees, our biggest concerns have not been addressed: wages that keep up with inflation and cost of living, proper staffing and fair workloads, and the reversal of Covid-era cuts in guest services and amenities," Unite HERE Local 5 wrote on its Facebook page.
Some guests have complained that they were not informed of the strike ahead of time, and that some services have been altered or are taking longer than expected.
"Guest comfort and well-being remains our top priority. Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort is engaging with guests individually to address any inconvenience and ensure they are taken care of during their stay with us," a hotel spokesperson said.
"We remain committed to serving our guests with our signature hospitality, while we continue to work in good faith to reach a fair and reasonable agreement with Unite HERE Local 5 that is beneficial to both our valued team members and to our hotel," the spokesperson said.
It's unclear how long the strike will continue. Workers say they are staying on strike until a fair contract is made.
